April 14, 2008   2008 Battle of the Bands press release

Fourth Annual RJL Battle of the Bands

The Ryan J. Lariviere Memorial Fund is a non-profit music-orientated foundation created in May of 2003 after, Ryan J. Lariviere, a member of the band dismal, passed away.  Ryan’s passion for music inspired his parents to establish a memorial to honor his memory and help emerging artists gain recognition. The grand prize winner is rewarded with enough support and funds to record a CD.

Total prizes worth more than $10,000

With donations from the RJL Memorial Fund, the Music Drives Us Foundation and our sponsors, the grand prize winner will receive 50 hours of recording/mastering time, 1,000 professionally illustrated and packaged CDs, online distribution, radio promotion, and will be featured for a month on PIXY’s Home Grown. All finalists win prizes including gear and internet services.

RJL, MDU & Bang Camaro’s Rock N’ Roll Boot Camp

In addition to the Battle, RJL Memorial Fund, Music Drives Us and Bang Camaro present the first Bang Camaro “Rock N’ Roll Boot Camp” taking place the afternoon of the Battle. The Boot Camp features nationally respected panelists who work in the trenches of the music business; they will share their expertise and tips for breaking in to the business and address topics such as how to put together a band the right way, booking venues, marketing, management, new media, video/TV, radio and retail information.  Attendees will learn how to advance – whether musicians or manager -- with the tools they need to make it to the next level in a music career.

One Day: Three Events

This amazing opportunity takes place on August 16, 2008.  The event kicks off with the Bang Camaro Rock N’ Roll Boot Camp from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Those attending the Boot Camp will have a unique opportunity to attend Bang Camaro’s sound check.  An afternoon break for semi finalists to sound check will follow and doors will open for the Battle at 6 p.m.  The Battle will feature seven original bands competing for the grand prize. The night will end with a special performance by Bang Camaro who MTV calls "The Premiere Party Band in America.”

Judging the Battle

Choosing the semi finalists will be the surviving members of Ryan’s band - dismal.  They will choose seven bands based on the EPK’s posted on Sonicbids.  The winner will be chosen at the Battle by a panel of judges comprised of industry pros.  Past judges have included such names as Carter Alan (mid-day DJ at WZLX), Michael Sweet (lead singer for Stryper), Martin Vasquez (Accomplished drummer and instructor), David Wood (Accomplished drummer and Grammy Member) and Patrick Faucher (CEO, Nimbit.com).  This year we are proud to announce the inclusion of Paul Geary (former drummer for Extreme and agent to bands such as Smashing Pumpkins and Godsmack) and Anthony J. Resta (producer/engineer/programmer working with bands like Duran Duran and Collective Soul).

The Ryan J. Lariviere Memorial Fund was set up by Rick and Marie Lariviere, in memory of their son Ryan Lariviere taken from this world way before his time. The vision for the Fund is to give new original unsigned musicians a chance to be discovered.

The Fund hosts an annual "Battle of the Bands" where musicians from New England compete to win a recording prize package. Each year musicians, whose musical talents and ideologies reflect those of Ryan's, competes for the grand prize. Using a panel of judges in the music industry, performers are judged using a set of established criteria consisting, in part, of musical style, content, quality, skills, originality, stage presence, and personal interests.

Music Drives Us (www.musicdrivesus.org) was founded by the Boch family as a way to support music education and outreach throughout New England. "We are thrilled that Bang Camaro has chosen to support the efforts of the Music Drives Us Foundation" says Ernie Boch Jr. To have Bang Camaro adopt our mission and work to help us achieve this task is a thrill. With these types of partnerships we can do more to bring access to music and all of its benefits to the underserved populations. We are looking forward to accomplishing a great deal together in the coming year. The fact that they are willing to make a difference as they climb to stardom says a lot for the band and its members."
